Sights of the Country

1. Is it just me, or do cows look like they are wearing tuxedos?

2. Hay bales or alien eggs?


3. Interesting plants in the country... they remind me of something but I can't quite arouse the word...


4. Traffic.


5. The "shopping area" in Te Kopuru consist of one shop, it may live up to it's name, "the really good shop" but it's hardly an area....

Hiking up from the lakes and overlooking the longest drivable beach in NZ. It’s an absolutely stunning area to live. Fresh water, Kai Iwi lakes is only 30 minutes away, and the rough beauty of the wild west coast is accessible at Baylys Beach, a short drive away, but living in a small town will take some getting used to.    I remember coming up for my interview and feeling very much like an outsider. I got a flat white at a local cafe which could compete with any cafe in Auckland, and observed people coming and going. I didn’t feel at ease as I usually do when I enjoy a solo coffee, and I couldn’t really put my finger on it, but now I can – in Auckland, I’m anonymous. RWC Opening Ceremony and NZ v Tonga.

The ticking red blocks in Britomart finally read 00. The countdown up on the downtown mall, and also in New Zealanders hearts, was all over. It was opening night of the Rugby World Cup, 2011. An event  I am happy to say that I was a part of. I remember watching the little red numbers tick down above the Westfield mall on Customs Street thinking  “I wonder where I will be, and what it’ll be like when this reads zero”. Where I was: Queen’s Ferry then Eden Park. What it was like: Just like every other sod in hospitality I had to work. It started off slow, quieter than a normal Friday lunch, but around 4 (and I was due to leave at 5) it got insane.  I have never seen Queen’s Ferry so packed, it was hard to move. Mostly everyone was in good spirits, but some were frustrated with how long they had to wait to get a drink. Queen’s Ferry is only a small bar, we only have one till, and if we have more than three people behind the bar we just end up smashing into each other. ...

A European experience isn’t complete without attending the world famous Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany. It’s a celebration of Bavarian beer and locals will feverishly argue that their beer is the best.
